Life Goes on.....
Just another evening….After a long day’s work, people going home….Eight well planned blasts….200 dead, 700 seriously wounded….
12 hours later… Just another day!!
Yes it is weird…very plainly eerie…. I heard of the first two blasts, and panicked like crazy. Only thought was to get back home as soon as possible.
Everybody speaks of the Mumbaikar’s spirit, the spirit to triumph over adversities…Had a glimpse of that yesterday…
I saw millions of people walking on the road; no auto’s to take them home, no buses to count on… I tried very hard to see fear on there faces…but all I could see was this firm determination to beat the odds, to get home….come hail or storm…
I picked up this girl who walked all the way from borivalli and had to reach bandra. My innocent comment about how she must be tired, just brought out a shrug and a sigh and a comment “Aadat ho gayi hai. Yaha kuch na kuch tho hota hi rehta. Aap lift na dethi tho mae chalke nikel jathi.” I couldn’t help but smile.
There was no police around to help the people trapped in the trains, the injured, and the dead…it was mumbaikar to the rescue again. People worked diligently to help, to assist, to do anything for the effected.
Once I got home I realized the gravity of the situations. The visuals were horrific. I froze. I couldn’t believe something so horrendous could happen. The plan was fatal enough. Hit where it hurts most. And all through the night I just couldn’t come to terms with this whole episode.
All said and done, I have this renewed respect for people here. What are the odds of water logging due to heavy rains, Hooliganism of Shiv Sainiks, and couple of blast thrown in…in a matter of days… Its like the nature and human conspiring to bring down the city…
I got out this morning for work and it dint seem any different from any other day….
I don’t know if it is indifference, unresponsiveness, and numbness to everything…. Mumbai doesn’t react!!!! They serenely take everything on there stride…. May be it is the survival instinct, may be this is the best way to deal with such situations…may be this is the way to be, when you are Mumbai!!!!
